I knew Hans Reiser quite well in the late 90’s at UCB, He also attended many parties at my house where I got to know him reasonably well. ( He and I were also founders of the first open computing facility at UC Berkeley ( ocf.berkeley.edu ).

I agree with your statement on his not being to socially intelligent. As for him being a genius? Maybe, maybe not, he did skip High School and go straight into UC Berkeley but then he did not accomplish anything for year after that, he even had problems using a text editor at times (he used EMACS in vi-mode).

As for his social aggression, all I can say to that one time when he did not get what he wanted he quietly walked up to me in a hall way and physically attacked me. The event ended quickly when a friend that was significantly bigger then him turned around and gave him a hard stare, he immediately retreated then walked away).

Do I think he is guilty? I do not know.

Do I think he is capable of doing it? yes.

Personally I have not seen him for 15 years and I don’t expect to see him for another 15.

20/20 is a television news show, which usually just gives coverage of a few stories per episode (sometimes just one story). Unlike other television news shows which give a short summary of many different stories, 20/20 gives more in-depth coverage of a handful of intriguing stories ("human-interest" stories). Examples given on the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20/20

For us non-US readers, what's the profile of a show like 20/20?
Wikipedia says "focuses more on human interest stories"...

Damn, with my faith in TV shows, I'm going to expect a "linux hacking ruined his family... and life!"

no no, must... think.. positive!
